If you look at the ingredients contained in most nut butters that you buy from the shop, you may be surprised to discover how much sugar is in there - not to mention other sweeteners, thickeners and a variety of different oils.
A healthier alternative - as well as much tastier - is to make your own.
I use a high-powered blender to make this nut butter but you can also use a food processor. Remember to stop and scrape the mixture down every few minutes. A food processor will take longer but do persevere, it is so worthwhile!
Healthy & Natural Home Made Nut Butter
Ingredients
- 2 cups organic raw nuts (I like almonds, peanuts, hazelnuts, cashew nuts - and sometimes a mixture!) ....... Photo above shows Peanut Butter.
Method
- Spread nuts onto a baking tray and roast in 150C - 160C oven for 20 minutes, stirring after 10 mins.
- Take tray out of oven and leave nuts to cool slightly.
- Put cooled nuts into blender (or food processor) and process until they are a butter-like consistency. You may have to stir a few times in between processing.
- Transfer nut butter to a clean glass jar.
Notes
- To make crunchy nut butter, I usually roast 1/4 cup extra nuts. When cooled, I take that 1/4 cup of nuts and roughly chop them and then stir these into the smooth blended nut butter.
- As mentioned, you can use this same method for any type of nut butter. I also make seed butters eg: sunflower seed butter, pumpkin seed butter, pine nut butter, sesame seed butter (tahini) in exactly the same way.
You can use this nut butter in cooking, baking, or simply eat it straight from the spoon!
Enjoy!
